Energy for Life
Energy for Life began in 2009 with the goal of supporting renewable energy technology as a tool for sustainable development and improvement of living conditions in developing countries.
The three-year campaign is being carried out in nine countries: Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Malta, Brazil, Tanzania, Laos and Cambodia. The goal of the Energy for Life campaign is to draw attention to the relevancy of renewable energy technology for sustainable development worldwide as well as to the problems caused by the diminishment of fossil resources and climate change. The intention is not only to broach the issue of the importance of renewable energy technology for developing countries, but also the interdependence of Europe and the developing countries.

Solar Cooling System in Brazil
In 2010 the Thuringian (Germany) firms JSJ Jodeit GmbH, SiCeram GmbH and Menz Gebäudetechnik Weimar developed a cooling system for the ecological hotel Pousada do Parque in the province Mato Grosso in Brazil and preassembled it at JSJ Jodeit GmbH in Jena, Germany. After successful test operation the system was shipped to Brazil and started operation on January 15, 2011. As a part of the BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development)-funded project the Thuringian regional association of the DGS created an information campaign on solar cooling in Brazil and supported the local University in Cuiaba, Mato Grosso in creating the course of study “Renewable Energy.” We carried out the first “Train the Trainer” seminar for the lecturers and professors from the university in February 2011.

PORTAFERM
The development of the PORTAFERM small biogas plant was funded and supported by the European Regional Development Fund from February 2009 through December 2010. The project partners ENGENIOS AG and BioVAG GbR developed the prototype of the PORTAFERM plant and installed and operated it at the Jerseyhof Meyenberg in Kaisershagen/ Thuringia for over a year. Bauhaus University Weimar oversaw the test operation from a scientific standpoint while the International Society for Solar Energy German Section was responsible for management and communication.
The Spanish partners Ente Público Regional de la Energía de Castilla y León (EREN) and BIOENERGÍA Y DESARROLLO TECNOLÓGICO S.L. (BYDT) worked simultaneously on a concept to build a PORTAFERM plant in Castilla y León.
